Meet the Guru: Hannah Persson, Cluster Groups, Meetings & Events Executive at Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa and DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Fiji

In Destination Wedding Planners, Planning, Planning & Tips by Ande Tongco

Hannah Persson did not set out to become a wedding coordinator. She started by volunteering to help with the little things – answering emails, assisting with setup – simply because she loved being part of the team. When the role opened up, she stepped in; and in her first two weeks as Wedding Executive, she booked seven weddings. Executing that first one herself was the real turning point. “Everything felt so right,” she says. “Like I had finally found my calling.” We asked her what makes Fiji – and these two resorts – worth the journey.

The Venue

What are the main reasons couples choose Hilton Fiji for their destination wedding?

The warmth of the team from the very first contact – and the settings, which speak for themselves. We make it our priority to stay closely connected and remain as flexible as possible to bring every wedding dream to life. Our goal is for couples to never have to lift a finger, which is why we’ve designed our packages to be completely stress-free. The venues themselves do the rest – stunning, versatile, and the perfect tropical backdrop for an unforgettable celebration.

Where’s your favourite spot at the resort for a stunning wedding photo?

The beachfront at sunset, and the bridge among the gardens just near the ceremony venue. Both offer something different – the beach is open, golden and dramatic at the right hour; the bridge is intimate and framed by tropical greenery in a way that feels timeless.

What’s the most Instagrammable spot at the resort?

The beachfront at sunset, without question. The colours of the Fijian sky combined with the resort’s famous beach swings make for an image that needs very little caption.

What’s the best room for the wedding night and why?

The One Bedroom Deluxe Beachfront Suite. It’s romantic and private – cosy rather than overwhelming, which feels just right after a wedding day. There’s a shared plunge pool just outside where you can soak in as newlyweds while listening to the ocean, and the patio is perfect for champagne at sunset or breakfast in robes the morning after.

What’s the one thing couples get at Hilton Fiji that they won’t find anywhere else?

The experience of being welcomed as Vuvale – family. The warmth here isn’t a service style; it’s a genuine cultural expression. Every guest is welcomed with a level of care that goes far beyond hospitality. It’s the blend of world-class Hilton service and authentic Fijian spirit, and the two together create something that stays with you long after you leave.

What are some of the chef’s specialities for a wedding menu?

Our chefs love showcasing the best of Fiji – fresh local ingredients with modern flavours. The Kokoda is always a highlight: a classic Fijian raw fish salad marinated in lime and fresh coconut cream that is wonderfully refreshing. The traditional Lovo roasted meats are another favourite. And the desserts are not to be missed.

What’s the most glamorous experience a couple can enjoy at the resort?

Our private cabana dinner right at the water’s edge – a bespoke menu, the sound of the waves, nothing but the Fijian night sky above. We also highly recommend the spa for a little extra pampering; after the wedding day, a couple deserves somewhere quietly luxurious to unwind.

The Planner’s Insights

What’s the biggest misconception couples have about planning a destination wedding in Fiji?

That it’s more stressful and complicated than planning at home. It’s actually the opposite. Between our dedicated team handling the details and our all-inclusive packages, we take the guesswork out of everything – so couples can focus on enjoying the process rather than managing it.

What’s the strangest wedding request you’ve ever had – and did you deliver?

The one that always makes me smile: couples who ask to have their in-laws’ rooms booked as far away from their own as possible. We make it happen, without question and without judgement. We also regularly manage seating for separated parents, placing them at opposite ends of the ceremony or reception so everyone feels comfortable. It’s all part of the job – and I’m sure there are more creative requests still to come.

What do wedding couples almost always forget?

The legal essentials – specifically the original copies of birth certificates and other documents required for the marriage licence. It’s the kind of thing that only becomes urgent at the worst possible moment, so I flag it with every couple well in advance.

What’s your best piece of advice for couples planning their destination wedding?

Truly trust your local experts, and feel free to over-communicate every detail you’re dreaming of. No question is ever too small. And then, once you step off the plane – stop being a planner and start being the bride or groom. You only get to truly enjoy everything if you trust the team to handle the heavy lifting while you simply enjoy the moment.

What’s the most memorable thing a couple has ever said to you after their wedding day?

Too many to choose from, but three stay with me. The first: “We chose the Hilton Fiji because of you, and we do not regret it.” The second: “You went above and beyond for us. From the moment we arrived we felt loved, welcome and so special. Our wedding was a blessing because you handled it with class and elegance without me lifting a single finger.” And the third: “It is so rare to find someone who genuinely cares about every little detail instead of just seeing it as a job. We truly wish every future couple could have a wedding coordinator like you to look after them.”

About Hannah

Hannah’s path into wedding coordination began with the small things – volunteering to help wherever she could, simply because she loved being part of the team. When the role officially opened up, she stepped in and booked seven weddings in her first two weeks. That first wedding she executed herself was the turning point. “Everything felt so right,” she says. “Like I had finally found my calling.” That spark has only grown since.

If your best friend called you tomorrow and said she was thinking about a destination wedding, what’s the one piece of advice you’d give her that she won’t find on any website?

Build a genuine connection with your coordinator early – share your dreams, not just your checklist. Then, once you arrive, stop planning. If you trust the person on the ground – someone who knows the local winds, the best sunset timings, and the heart of the team – you can truly let go. Your wedding will feel exactly how you feel it; so feel excited, feel present, and let us handle the rest.

Hannah’s Insider Tip for Fiji

Get out and truly explore. I always suggest visiting the Garden of the Sleeping Giant or heading into the local markets on a Saturday morning to see the real Fiji. Most importantly, lean into Fiji Time – slow down, let the days unfold, jump on a day trip or a sunset cruise. And carry cash; many of the best local spots still prefer it.
