Real Life Wedding: Rasna & Chirayu – Thailand

On 22 to 24 November 2013, Rasna and Chirayu Oberoi had a traditional Hindi wedding at the spectacular Dhara Dhevi in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The lively event was filled with days of colourful celebrations.

Why did you choose a destination wedding?

There’s always a different sense of enjoyment and interaction with your guests during a destination wedding. We both live in Dubai and wanted to get married somewhere exotic and fun with good weather, also somewhere that would be convenient for our guests to get to. We globe-trotted to find the perfect destination, only to find ourselves back in Thailand.

Why did you decide on the location and resort?

My parents visited the Dhara Dhevi eight years ago. When they returned, all they talked about was how magical it was and how they’d love for me to get married there. It truly is a mystical venue that resembles an ancient city of temples. It also offers phenomenal service, food and venues for a wedding.

How many guests did you have and where did they stay?

We had 400 guests. Our families stayed at Shangri-La Hotel Chiang Mai, while our friends stayed at the Siripanna Villa Resort & Spa in Chiang Mai.

Did you have any pre-ceremony entertainment or activities?

Being an Indian wedding, there were several events that took place. We packed about five events into three days. Day one was a welcome dinner. Day two involved a Mehndi during the day and Sangeet at night. Day three was the wedding ceremony followed by a reception.

What theme or style did you base your wedding on?

Our welcome dinner had a tribal theme as Chiang Mai is a city immersed in mountains and jungle. Entertainment included fire dancers, a percussionist and tribal face painting.

The Mehndi had an oriental theme inspired by my lehenga. Oriental elements included Chinese Lion dances, a cherry blossom tree knotted with glass bangles, fan painting and massages. My family and friends also did some gorgeous dances for us which was a touching surprise.

Describe your reception.

A classic white and antique gold theme complemented the ancient Thai architecture of the Dhara Dhevi. The food was exquisite; we offered a large selection of European and Thai food to our guests. We also hired a wonderful opera/jazz singer, Toshan Nongbet.

What was your wedding highlight?

The wedding ceremony, being the most sacred, was the most heart warming experience. It was set in a gorgeous location at the Dhara Dhevi under an accent pergola backdropped with paddy fields.

Did you honeymoon in the same location?

We had a four-night mini-moon at Huvafen Fushi in the Maldives. Later we’ll be off to Italy for two weeks to see Rome, the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Venice and Florence.

Any advice for couples planning a similar wedding?

Take everything in and keep smiling even when your jaw goes numb.
