Australia Elopement Guide

How to legally Elope in Australia

One of the reasons couples love eloping in Australia is how straightforward the legal process can be. Here are the essentials:

  • Age requirements: Both partners must be at least 18 years old. (In special circumstances, one partner aged 16–18 may marry with parental consent and court approval.)
  • Notice period: You’ll need to complete and lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage with your celebrant at least one month before your chosen date.
  • Witnesses: Two witnesses over the age of 18 must be present at the ceremony.
  • Documentation: Proof of identity, birth date, and place of birth must be provided to your celebrant. If either partner has been married before, evidence of divorce or death of a former spouse is also required.
  • Inclusivity: Since 2017, same-sex marriages are fully recognised across Australia.

Once the paperwork is taken care of, you’re free to focus on the fun part — choosing the perfect location and planning a celebration that feels completely your own.
