Why did you select the destination and venue you did?
Thailand is such a special place to us that holds so many beautiful memories and promises so many more. …a barefoot beach wedding that truly reflects who we are, our love for each other and our love of life. The islands of Thailand have witnessed the evolution of our relationship and to share our special day with those we most love in the place we most cherish was a dream come true. We chose a private villa on Koh Samui to ensure our location was exclusive to us. It was absolutely perfect!Did you have guests attend, and if so, what was their reaction to you having a destination wedding?
Our guests had the time of their lives! 24 of our closest friends and family made the journey from Melbourne to Koh Samui. Most had known that our nuptials would be held in our Thai paradise so when the invites finally went out everyone was incredibly excited to escape to a tropical island and soak up the sunshine whilst celebrating our very special day. We were especially grateful Matt’s 84-year-old grandmother made the trip over and she had an absolute ball getting on and off longtail boats between islands and taking in the wonderful Thai culture and cuisine. What is your favourite memory of the day?
Oh so many! Weddings in Thailand are just so magical! We chose to be a little untraditional and do a ‘first look’ session. The opportunity to see each other privately before our ceremony was absolutely incredible. We loved being the first ones to see each other at our very best. Wedding days can become such a blur so we wanted to make sure we took moments together to really absorb the surreality of it all and be in the moment together. Having written our ceremony completely ourselves the whole thing was just as we wished for. Saying our vows was truly beautiful, along with the moment we were announced husband and wife. It was truly magical releasing Thai lanterns into the sky with our family and friends. We adored our photo shoot at sunset on the beach together and then all the memorable surprises we’d arranged for the reception. It was priceless seeing our guests react to our baby elephant appearance, the fireworks and an incredible thai fire dancing performance! Oh so many favourites! What was the best thing about having a destination wedding?
The opportunity to have our intimate wedding day amidst the most beautiful holiday with our closest family and friends. Everyone was so relaxed and it enabled us all to really share in the experience over a whole week. We were able to share our ‘second home’ and secret beach hideaways with those closest to us. We were so grateful that our wedding didn’t feel rushed and we had the opportunity to spend meaningful time with each and every one of our guests. What theme or style did you base your wedding decorations on?
Beachside Elegance. We loved the idea of maintaining an atmosphere of elegance to match our luxurious private villa. The naturally beautiful surrounds of our beachfront ceremony was complemented with a simplistic bamboo alter with silk draping and white orchids. We adorned our white Tiffany style wooden chairs with a dusky pink ribbon and lined the aisle with white and dusky pink petals to match my bridesmaid’s dresses. Our reception table centrepieces were beautiful white Phalaenopsis Orchids and we added in hints of the ocean with seating names tied to starfish. I had white Phalaenopsis Orchids and roses for my bridal bouquet. Our colour theme was predominantly white with touches of soft dusky pink, offset by the evening’s sunset and romantic hues. How did you wedding coordinator assist you?
Our wonderful wedding coordinator Aey from Dreamcatcher’s Weddings and Events was incredible in pulling together our absolute dream wedding. Countless emails over the twelve month lead up allowed us to discuss and coordinate every finest detail. We sent Aey pictures and her team of creative geniuses would match what we dreamed up. Aey was responsible for coordinating the hire of our luxurious wedding villa as well as the catering, music, ceremony and reception decorations and everything in between. It’s no wonder they call themselves Dreamcatchers!
Did you honeymoon in the same location?
We stayed in Koh Samui, Thailand with family and took them via speedboat, to another nearby island that we have grown to call our second home. We shared time together as a group before the two of us escaped to yet again another island for some honeymoon time and then for something completely different we flew from Thailand to Japan and spent the remainder of our honeymoon snowboarding in the Japanese Alps, Hakuba Valley. We combined two extreme climates, cultures and surroundings but our honeymoon oozed adventure and totally reflected who we are as a couple. We even took our wedding attire to the snowfields for some breathtaking photos which eventuated into snowboarding in my wedding gown!
