Why did you choose to have a destination wedding?

We chose a destination wedding because our friends and family members live all over Australia. We thought what better way to bring everyone together than to meet in Thailand. We chose Thailand because it was reasonably affordable to ask our guests to travel there and because we both absolutely love Thai food and culture. We researched many different resorts in Thailand, however the Katathani stood out from day one.

What was your guests’ reaction to a destination wedding?

We had 38 friends and family attend our wedding. All of our guests were extremely excited to travel to Thailand as it was a great excuse for them to get away and make a holiday out of it. We also had children attend, and as Thailand is such a child-friendly destination we had great feedback from families that travelled to our wedding. We made sure that when we decided on a destination wedding that we sent out ‘save the date’ cards a year in advance to give our guests as much notice as possible to start saving and preparing.

What is your favourite memory of the day?

There are many favourite memories but I think my stand out memory is walking down the aisle towards my ‘husband to be’ with the stunning blue waters of the Andaman Sea behind him and seeing his beautiful big smile.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding?

Being away with all of our friends and family on a big holiday was by far the best thing about our destination wedding. Everybody was so relaxed and in ‘holiday’ mode that it made our wedding day stress-free and enjoyable. It was great that everybody got to meet before the wedding, organising day trips to explore Thailand as well as dinners out. The process of organising a destination wedding was stress-free and extremely easy. From day one we’ve had zero regrets about choosing a destination wedding.

What theme or style did you base your wedding on?

Because of the beautiful and breathtaking scenery and views that our resort offered, we wanted to keep the style simple so as not to overshadow the natural beauty of Phuket. We chose a classic and simple white palette with pops of gold in our invitations and table decorations. All of the flowers at the ceremony and reception were white and crisp to highlight the beautiful backdrop of Phuket. At night we had lots of fairy lights, lanterns, candles and sparklers to create a warm atmosphere which continued the timeless and classic theme.

How did your wedding coordinator help you?

Our wedding coordinator was amazing! She went above and beyond in every way imaginable – from sourcing favours and sparklers to ensuring that the decorations and settings were exactly what we asked for. She replied to emails the same day and was very accommodating when we asked to change things in our wedding package or add extra things.

Where did you honeymoon?

We flew to Koh Samui for our honeymoon the morning after our wedding. We stayed at the Mantra Samui Resort which was amazing as the resort was up in the hills and overlooked the island. We stayed for seven nights and enjoyed elephant trekking, diving in Koh Tao, thai cooking classes and exploring the markets.
