Real Life Wedding: Helen & Tyson – New York

Helen Holdsworth and Tyson Croll married on 17 October 2013 in New York City, USA. They had their ceremony at Hernshead in Central Park, followed by a reception in Penthouse A at the Royalton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan.

Why did you choose a destination wedding?

We wanted a place that was exciting (a bit livelier than Brisbane) and a bit of an adventure for ourselves, our friends and families. Plus, Tyson’s sister got married in Tuscany in 2011, so we had to try and at least match that wedding!

Why did you select that destination and venue?

New York was a place neither of us had been before but definitely wanted to visit – so a wedding seemed like a good excuse! Once we started researching New York, we knew it definitely had the vibe we wanted. The trouble was narrowing down a venue. I simply couldn’t go past Central Park, with so many different photo opportunities in one place – and it only cost us a $25 permit fee to get married there.

Did you have guests attend and, if so, what was their reaction to a destination wedding?

We had a small intimate wedding of 30 guests, which was a perfect number for the venue (we limited the guest list to immediate family and closest friends). Most had not been to the USA before, so they were thrilled with the invite and took the chance to travel the country for a few weeks after the wedding.

What is your favourite memory of the day?

Helen: My favourite memory was seeing the day plan out 100 times better than I had ever imagined. The moment that sticks in my mind is walking into the reception with Tyson, seeing the room looking so beautifully decorated and thinking, “This is going to be the best night”.

Tyson: The reception was my favourite too, I had no idea what Helen had planned and it was awesome! I loved standing on the balcony watching the city lights come on as night fell, then looking to my left and seeing the Chrysler building all lit up.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding?

We loved that we were able to take a much needed break, and get together with our families and friends on the other side of the world and explore the USA together.

What theme or style did you base your wedding decorations on?

We chose the Royalton Hotel because it had quite a sophisticated, sexy and sensual feel with dark wooden furniture, leather, fur and fireplaces. We added romantic accents like dark linen, black and white stationary, deep red flowers and lots of candles.

How did your wedding coordinator assist you?

I researched several websites but chose Fabulous Weddings New York. I’m so glad I did as our wedding coordinator, Carol Campanella, was fabulous.

Did you honeymoon in the same location?

We stayed in New York for a few days, then travelled to Washington DC, Las Vegas and Los Angeles with friends. We then said goodbye to our friends and had a week, just the two of us, in Hawaii. Hawaii was by far my favourite place!
