An adorable first date, heartwarming proposal and stunning ceremony – we absolutely adore Danelle and Trevor’s destination wedding at Ayana Resort & Spa in Bali.
How did you meet?
Trevor and I met during a night out – he was head of security at a popular nightclub on the Gold Coast, and I was on a girls night out. I’m 6 foot 1 inch so to find taller guys can sometimes be a mission. When I saw this security guard standing a striking 6 foot 6 inches I approached and asked for a photo with him. After chatting for a while he got called to the front of club and I sneakily put my phone number into his phone under ‘Call me haha’. Trevor found it and to my surprise called the next week and asked to take me on a date ice skating. I thought – this guy thinks out of the box and is wanting to make an impression – so I said yes. It was apparent from this first date that he had a way of sweeping you off your feet. During our date he showed off his ice skating skills and had to scoop up a young boy in an effort not to knock him over! It wasn’t long after the date that Trevor ended up sweeping me off my feet too.
Tell us about the proposal.
Trevor arranged for one of my girlfriends to take me to a cupcake decorating class. I said yes as it was our daughter’s first birthday in a month and I wanted to have cupcakes with a ‘wow’ factor. After the class she dropped me home and I went into the kitchen to find a single red rose with a note saying “be ready by 4:30 as you will be picked up and taken to a secret location…” I thought it was just like The Bachelor – how exciting! I was picked up and chaffeured up Mount Tamborine and as we got higher up the mountain the clouds got greyer. Then to my surprise I looked out of the vehicle to see a romantic setting on a cliff-face with Trevor and our 11-month old daughter Zavianah standing in the wings waiting. I rushed over to them, Trevor looked into my eyes and said “your daughter has something for you”. I looked down and around her neck she had a ribbon with a small silver ring. Upon closer inspection the ring was engraved with “Will you marry my dad?” After an excited squeal I embraced them both and said ‘YES!’. We then sat down and waited for the sunset as we enjoyed the treats he had arranged for our evening – then a massive hail storm erupted. The unfortunate, abrupt end to the occasion is quite laughable, because Trevor and I always say our life together ‘never has a dull moment’.
Why did you choose Bali for your wedding?
Our first family holiday was in Bali, so I thought it was quite fitting that we would return to celebrate our wedding day there. We wanted our nearest and dearest family and friends, just an intimate gathering in a small piece of Bali heaven. After looking at many exquisite locations we decided to have our wedding in a glass chapel on a cliff that over looked the Indian Ocean, so we could enjoy a unique sunset with breathtaking views. The Ayana Resort & Spa not only delivered but exceeded my expectations. In one word it was ‘perfection’.
What did you do for your hens’ and bucks’ parties?
A small group of close girlfriends surprised me with a weekend away in Byron Bay, all mother’s of young children we embraced the opportunity to have a ‘no responsibility’ weekend of fun and relaxation. For Trevor’s bucks party, his mates organised an apartment in Surfers Paradise and a night out to remember.
What was your key styling inspiration?
I am a lover of all things ‘bling’, so I had unique pieces designed to complement the theme.
Where did you splurge and where did you save on your wedding?
Our rings were a definite splurge… but also a lifetime investment. I saved on our flights to Bali, picking up flights that were on sale.
What gifts did you give your guests?
We organised for each of our guests to receive a ‘Bali Survival Bag’ when they arrived. Inside it were token Bali gifts of a Bintang singlet, stubby cooler and pluggers!
What was the funniest moment of the day?
The funniest moment was when our 20-month-old daughter attempted to walk down the aisle. The doors to the chapel opened, she froze and her daddy Trevor had to go to her rescue… her very own super hero!
What was your most special memory of the day?
Trevor and I wrote our own vows for each other. Hearing them read aloud was a very memorable moment.
What did you do for your honeymoon?
We stayed on the opposite coast, at Conrad Bali in Nusa Dua, for a week’s honeymoon… well a ‘trio-moon’ as we called it – as we had our young daughter with us. We enjoyed family time, while also having some special time alone thanks to our lovely babysitter, ‘Auntie’ – who our daughter just adored.
